Nursery Rhymes and Songs with your baby

Newborn babies learn by hearing sounds at different pitch and tones. Depending on the song, music can both calm or stimulate your baby. Think of your own reaction to different music. Gentle lullabies such as Twinkle Twinkle Little Star can help calm your little one when they’re upset, especially if they can also focus on the movement of your fingers too. Alternatively a rhyme such as ‘Round and Round the Garden’ can excite and stimulate them.

Repetition is very important to babies and young children. When we sing songs and say nursery rhymes in conjunction with the fingerplay, actions and movements, research shows us that it helps their speech and language development. Dancing with your little one can also be a lot of fun, and important for their physical and mental development to move rhythmically to the music.

Some Nursery Rhymes, Fingerplays & Songs to try with your little ones include:

  • Twinkle Twinkle
  • Round and Round the Garden
  • Incy Wincy Spider
  • Row, Row, Row your boat
  • Baa Baa Black Sheep
  • Wheels on the Bus
  • Old Macdonald had a farm
  • This Little Piggy went to Market
  • Humpty Dumpty
Try to sing some songs or rhymes with your little one each day. You may even like to make it part of a bedtime or daily routine
